WASAC Projects on increasing access to clean water to 100%

There are a number of projects ongoing and near completion countrywide aimed at achieving Vision 2020 goal-100 per cent access to clean water. Access to clean water stands at 85% countrywide with urban settlements illustrating 90% and Rural- 84%.

Nzove Water Treatment Plant            

Phase 1- Commissioning 25,000m3/day water treatment plant began in March 2016 to increase production from 65,000m3 to 90.000m3/day in Kigali against the demand which is 120,000m3/day. Phase 2, which will be commissioned in July this year will add 55,000m3/day summing the total capacity to 145,000m3/day.

The progress for Phase 2 works is currently at 40% and should completely cover demand for Kigali. Phase 2 involves upgrading production capacity of the existing 25,000m3day to 40,000m3/day and construction of a new treatment plant with initial capacity of 40,000m3/day with upgradable capacity of 65,000m3/day when demand increases in the future.

Construction of forwarding infrastructure of pipeline of 5.2km from Nzove to Mt Kigali and Reservoir, which will distribute water to Remera, Kimironko, Kanombe and Kicukiro.

Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation Phase II (LV WATSAN Phase II Project)

The project is completed with handover scheduled end of January 2017.

In Kayonza town: 

For water supply: constructed new intake and a water treatment plant at Gishari producing about 2,600m3/day and laid transmission pipe of about 12.5 km from the WTP up to the new reservoir tank of 1,000 m3. Also laid distribution pipe within the town of Kayonza of about 30 km.

For sanitation works, construction of landfill site and a feacal sludge treatment plant with capacity of 10m3/day completed.

 In Nyanza town:

For water supply: Constructed a new water treatment plant at Mpanga WTP producing about 5000 m3/day and placed a transmission pipe from the WTP to the new reservoir tank of 2,000 m3. Also placed distribution pipes within the town of Nyanza of about 50 km.

For sanitation works: constructed landfill site and a feacal sludge treatment plant with capacity of 10m3/day

In Nyagatare town:

For water supply: Constructed a new intake at Umuvumba river and a water treatment plant near Nyagatare town producing about 2,300 m3/day. A transmission pipe of about 5 km laid from the intake – break pressure tank – WTP to the new reservoir tank of 800 cubic meters and laid distribution pipes within the town of Nyagatare of about 18 km.

For sanitation works: Constructed a landfill site and feacal sludge treatment plant with capacity of 10m3/day.

Bugesera

A network in Bugesera existed with no production of water therefore; WASAC is constructing Kanyonyomba Water Treatment Plant, which will supply the areas of Gashora and Rweru with 5,000 cubic meters daily. Constructing forwarding infrastructure of 50km distributing pipe and reservoir (2,750 cubic meters). 50,000 people will benefit including health center, school and industrial park with expected completion date in December 2017.

Construction of forwarding infrastructure from Ngenda Water treatment plant to reservoir in Mount Nsoro, which will supply Nyamata.

Rusizi

In the isolated island of Nkombo, there exists a network with no water. WASAC Constructed forward infrastructure consisting of a reservoir of 200 cubic meters.  The Water Treatment Plant produces 720 cubic meters daily benefiting 17,500 people. Twenty-four boreholes with hand pumps are in construction surrounding the island, each 500 meters away from the other.

There is an ongoing technical handover of Litiro water supply system in Giheke, which produces 6,000 cubic meter daily to Ruganda tank, which has a capacity of 1000 cubic meters. This will benefit 6 sectors that include Giheke, Nkungu, Kamembe, Gihundwe, Nkanka, Mururu in Rusizi Distrist. In Nyamasheke District, the following will benefit: Shangi, Bushenge, Ruhanrambuga, Karengera.  Total beneficiaries sum up to 80,000 people in Rural and Urban settlements.

Nyaruguru

There is ongoing construction of Nyungwe-Kibeho- Ndago- Coko water supply system in Nyaruguru District. The project stands at 88% completion, benefiting 50,500 people in 4 sectors from a 105km distributing pipe supplying 77 public taps. The sector beneficiaries include Kivu, Muganza, Ruramba, Mata, Kibeho and Cyahinda. The production capacity reaches 1324 cubic meters per day.

Kamonyi

Ongoing works of drinking water supply system in 4 sectors- Ntwari, Kayenzi, Karama, Musambira in Kamonyi District. The project will benefit 17,000 people from a 69km distributing pipe supplying 57 public taps. The production capacity stands at 378 cubic meters daily.  In November 2017, the project will be complete.

Rutsiro

The near completion project in Rutsiro District (Musasa-Boneza-Mushonyi) will benefit 45,000 people from 5 sectors that include Ruhango, Mushonyi, Musasa, Boneza and Manihira. Construction of 89km distributing pipe will be supplying water to 96 public taps. The production capacity reaches 691 cubic meters daily. The project is due for completion in March 2017.

Gatsibo

Ongoing construction of water supply system in Gihengeri, Ngarama and Gatsibo in Gatsibo District. The project will benefit 55,000 people from 5 sectors that include Nyagihanda, Ngarama, Gitoki, Kabarore and Rwimbogo.  Ongoing construction of 70km distributing pipe that will supply 37 public taps. The production capacity stands at 2400 cubic meters daily. The project is due for completion in November 2017.

Gicumbi

Construction of drinking water supply system in Murama, Rwamiko, Bukure and Mivoye- Nyamiyaga in Gicumbi District. The project has a production capacity of 1,036 cubic meters daily, benefiting 38,000 people from a 65km distributing pipe supplying 59 public taps. The project will be complete in November 2017.

Gisagara

Construction of drinking water supply system in Gisagara District (Higiro- Kigembe- Mukindo) with a production capacity of 777 cubic meters. 40,000 people will benefit from project. The construction of 100km distributing pipeline ongoing, supplying to 51 public taps; the completion date of the project slated for November 2017

Construction of Mayada Sud- Hakan Peat and Kibirizi water supply system in Gisagara District. 24,300 people will benefit with the construction of 87 km distributing pipeline, supplying 81 public taps. The project will have a production capacity of 605 cubic meters slated for completion in September 2017

Nyarugenge

Ongoing construction of drinking water supply system in Mageregare-Nyaruyenzi in Nyarugenge District with the production capacity of 518 cubic meters. 9,870 people will benefit (2 sectors): Mageragere and Gahanga with the construction of 18.5km distributing pipeline supplying 10 public taps. The project is due for completion in June 2017.

Nyagatare

Construction of water supply system of Musheri Phase 2 is completed. The project will benefit 70,000 people from 4 sectors (Musheri, Karangazi, Nyagatare, Matimba and Rwimiyaga) with a construction of 97km distributing pipeline that supplies to 31 public taps. The production capacity reaches 800 cubic meters daily. The project is the handover process.

Burera

Construction of Nyabizi-Butaro-Kivuye water supply system in Burera District. 12,000 people from 2 sectors (Butaro and Kivuye) will benefit from this project. The project will have production capacity of 518 cubic meters per day with completion due in December 2017.

Nyanza/Huye

Rehabilitation and extension of water supply system of Ruhashya- Ntyazo in Nyanza District. Beneficiary sectors include Rusatira, Kanazi, Ntyazo, Kibirizi with a total population of 33,000 people. There is construction of 97km distributing pipeline. The project is due for completion in January 2018.

Ngororero/Nyabihu

Construction of Gisuma-Kabaya, Muhororo-Nganzo and Bitare-Sovu water supply system in Ngororero District. 13,000 people from4 sectors: Muhororo, Sovu, Kabaya, and Shyira in Nyabihu District. The production capacity is 864 cubic meters per day due for completion in September 2017.
