Nyamagabe WASH Program set to boost Water Access from 59% to Full Coverage

05/06/2025
The Ministry of Infrastructure, through WASAC Group in collaboration with Water For People and Nyamagabe District, has officially launched the Nyamagabe WASH Program. This initiative aims to provide sustainable and climate-resilient water, sanitation, and hygiene services to all communities, schools, health facilities, and other institutions across the district by 2030.
The launch was officiated by Gemma Maniraruta, the Director General in charge of Water and Sanitation at the Ministry of Infrastructure, and Prof. Omar Munyaneza, the Chief Executive Officer of WASAC Group, alongside other WASH partners, after laying the foundation stone at one of the water points to be constructed through the program.
The Nyamagabe WASH Program is expected to increase water access from the current 59% to full coverage for all Nyamagabe residents, while also providing sanitation and hygiene services to all communities.
Speaking to the residents present at the event, Gemma Maniraruta emphasized that the program aligns with the national target of achieving universal access to clean water and sanitation services for all Rwandans by 2029. She highlighted the program’s critical role in improving public health and the livelihoods of the population.
“I am confident that the Government of Rwanda and Water For People’s interventions in Nyamagabe District will significantly contribute to poverty reduction and enhanced wellbeing. Beyond improving prosperity, these interventions will create jobs and drive economic development,” she said.
Key components of the program include the construction of new water treatment plants at Rukarara and Mbirurume, strengthening the existing Gisuma Water Treatment Plant to increase its production capacity to 1,700 m³/day, rehabilitation and extension of 46 existing water supply systems, construction of 1,396 toilet cabins, 91 girls’ rooms, and installation of 571 rainwater tanks in schools.
In his remarks, Prof. Omar Munyaneza urged residents to safeguard water infrastructure from vandalism. He also encouraged them to connect water services to their homes as they become available and to ensure timely payment of water bills.
The Mayor of Nyamagabe District, Hildebrand Niyomwungeri, expressed gratitude to the Government of Rwanda for initiating the Nyamagabe WASH Program through the Ministry of Infrastructure and acknowledged key partners, including Water For People and WaterAid Rwanda.
The implementation of the Nyamagabe WASH Program will require a total investment of $62 million and will run until 2030. The program will be led by Nyamagabe District, WASAC Group, and Water For People as the primary implementing partners.
