Rwamagana District March 22, 2026. Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC Group), in partnership with the H2O Consortium and other stakeholders, joined residents of Karenge Sector to celebrate World Water Day 2026 under the theme “Water and Gender,” emphasizing the connection between water access and gender equality.

The event was held in the Karenge Sector, where the existing Karenge Water Treatment Plant is being upgraded with funding from the Government of Hungary, which was represented at the event by Ms. Zsófia Antal, Chargé d’Affaires of the Hungarian Embassy to Rwanda. Residents of Karenge Sector gathered to celebrate both the occasion and the ongoing construction of the facility. Once completed, the project will increase the plant’s production capacity from 12,000 m³ per day to 48,000 m³ per day, helping to reduce water scarcity in Rwamagana District and in parts of the City of Kigali that experience insufficient water supply, including Ndera, Gasogi, and Kanombe, among others.

In her remarks, Gemma Maniraruta expressed gratitude to the Government of Hungary and noted the importance of water, as well as the Government of Rwanda’s target to scale up water access in all villages by 2029, as stipulated in the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2). “Water is life, a basic need, and a right of every person. We cannot achieve sustainable development without water. The Government of Rwanda is making significant efforts to reduce non-revenue water and increase access across the country. The upgrade of the Karenge Water Treatment Plant will significantly improve water supply to Kigali City and Rwamagana District,” she said.

Maxime Mwiseneza Marius, Managing Director of WASAC Utility, called on residents of Karenge Sector and the general public to safeguard water resources and use them responsibly. “We cannot achieve meaningful progress without your collaboration in water conservation,” he said. “It is everyone’s responsibility to manage water wisely, promote rainwater harvesting, and sustain the gains we have made.”

Observed annually on March 22, World Water Day provided a platform for artistic performances that helped raise awareness among the Karenge Sector community about the importance of water and the need for its proper management and conservation.
