WASAC Group Provides Clean Water to Genocide Survivors in Gatsibo District

17/05/2025
As part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, WASAC Group inaugurated a new water supply system on Friday, May 16, 2025, in Gatsibo District. Implemented under the “Kuremera” project, the initiative has provided clean water to Genocide survivors and nearby residents in the Nyungwe and Akabingo settlements, located in the sectors of Kiziguro and Kiramuruzi.
The inauguration ceremony was officiated by Gisele Umuhumuza, Managing Director of WASAC Utility and Richard Gasana, the Mayor of Gatsibo District.
Speaking on behalf of the local community, 70-year-old Charles Nyangezi from Akabingo Village expressed deep gratitude to WASAC Group.
“Before this project, we had to walk seven kilometers to fetch water, often buying it at 200 Rwandan francs per jerrycan, a cost many couldn’t afford. Now, with a water point just nearby, we only pay 20 francs. This is a huge relief. We thank the Government of Rwanda and WASAC Group for making clean water accessible to us.”
After unveiling one of the two newly constructed water points, Mayor Gasana commended WASAC Group’s support, which he said had significantly improved access to clean water in the district.
“We’re grateful to WASAC Group for this generous initiative, which not only supports Genocide survivors but benefits the entire community. This is more than infrastructure. It restores dignity to people who have long been deprived of this essential service. I urge residents to report any cases of unfair water pricing. Access to water is a basic human right,” he said.
WASAC Utility Managing Director Gisele Umuhumuza stressed the importance of community responsibility in maintaining the new infrastructure.
“This project is about more than pipelines and water point. It is about restoring dignity, healing wounds and building a better future. By bringing clean water closer to Genocide survivors and their neighbors, we’re meeting a fundamental need. This infrastructure belongs to the community. Protect it and ensure it’s not misused.”
Before the inauguration, WASAC Group officials paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Kiziguro Genocide Memorial and donating one million Rwandan francs to support the site's maintenance.
The “Kuremera” project, which commenced in January 2025 and concluded in May, was carried out at an estimated cost of 12 million Rwandan francs. It is part of WASAC Group’s corporate social responsibility efforts focused on improving the lives of vulnerable communities in Rwanda.
